Founded in 1979, it brings together professionals and practitioners in community health and development to provide services to countries in Eastern, Southern and Central Africa: - Organisational Resource Development and Management
- Promotion of Community Initiatives in Health and Development throughout Africa
Currently it manages seven projects in the region. These are designed to: • work with interested communities, in various parts of Kenya and other countries to identify suitable programmes • carry out activities to create demand for identified programmes • strengthen people’s confidence in their own ideas and actions for health • identify and support prime movers within communities, and encourage them in their hope and belief that they can catalyze transformation of their communities • strengthen home-based care to help families to cope with the needs of the chronically and terminally ill, HIV/AIDS patients and patients suffering from other ailments • establish and manage comprehensive participatory school health programmes as services and as facilities for developing leadership and capacity for health action • promote initiatives which will assist families to attain food security at household level Operation Upgrade Based in South Africa, Operation Upgrade works with literacy projects. Its approach is that social change is the goal, but that this involves the development of strong literacy skills. For this reason, the Operation Upgrade literacy component of any adult basic education curriculum is strongly structured. In addition Operation Upgrade trains educators to develop literacy lessons based on the real needs of learners, so that local issues such as AIDS, child abuse or the shortage of water, are incorporated into the programme. • Download their manual linking literacy and health, "Good Health Begins at home; A guide for literacy tutors" (36 pp in Zulu and English) Doses of Hope
