NGO Management

A distance learning course in Management of NGOs is offered by Fahamu. It takes five months during which you work ten hours per week using a CD-ROM, e-mail discussions with groups and distance tutors.

Project Cycle Management

If you need greater understanding on the Project Cycle download Section A of How to Build a Good Small NGO. This will take you through the cycle using a Case Study.

The Project Cycle – A Teaching Module has a training exercise using the same case study. Work through this with your colleagues to increase your skills.

And use Gender Issues in the Project Cycle – A Checklist as you work.

On Being in Charge has a section on the Project Management Cycle: download the Table of Contents and then Part 4: This covers project planning, implementation and evaluation – the management cycle.

The PCM Group in Belgium offer courses in the following subjects (in English & French):

• PROJECT CYCLE MANAGEMENT (PCM)
• ADVANCED PCM
• MODERATION of participatory analysis and planning workshops (GOPP)
• MONITORING & EVALUATION.

People Management

See the following relevant sections in manuals available from this site:

How to Build a Good Small NGO

Download Section B: Good People Management

On Being in Charge

Download the the Table of Contents and then Part 2.

• Chapter two, “Leading a Health Team”, covers issues such as working together, motivation, job descriptions etc.

• Chapter four, “Controlling and assessing the Work”, covers supervision. Although this manual is written primarily for the Health field, these issues hold true for almost all work situations.

Building Capacity

The AIDS Alliance has an NGO Capacity Analysis workshop available on its site as a PDF (1.3 Mb). Although it is designed for NGOs facing the AIDS epidemic it would be a useful exercise for any NGO.

As responses to HIV/AIDS are scaled up, NGOs and CBOs are finding they need to develop their own capacity to deliver and support programmes. This toolkit can be used by organisations themselves or by people who support NGOs and CBOs to identify capacity building needs, plan technical support interventions and monitor and evaluate the impact of capacity building.
